What a Cal/OSHA Compliance Audit Covers
- Injury and Illness Prevention Program — whether your IIPP meets all eight required elements of 8 CCR §3203, and whether it reflects what your operation actually does
- Written programs — hazard communication, respiratory protection, lockout/tagout, confined space, heat illness prevention, bloodborne pathogens, emergency action, and any program triggered by your specific operations
- Physical walkthrough — machine guarding, electrical, walking-working surfaces, fall protection, egress, PPE use, chemical storage, and housekeeping

Why Employers Audit Before They Are Inspected
Cal/OSHA does not need a complaint to inspect you. Programmed inspections, accident reporting, and referrals all open the door. Once an inspector is on site, the written programs you have are the written programs you are judged on — there is no opportunity to build them retroactively.
An audit is also the practical starting point after an acquisition, after a serious injury, when your insurer or a general contractor requires proof of a safety program, or when responsibility for safety has changed hands internally and no one is certain what condition the program is in.
How the Audit Works
- Scoping call. We identify your operations, headcount, sites, and which Title 8 standards apply to you.
- Document review. Written programs, training records, and injury logs are reviewed before anyone walks the floor.
- Site walkthrough. Conditions are documented with photographs and referenced to the specific regulation at issue.
- Findings report. Every finding is tied to a citable section, ranked by severity and likelihood of citation.
- Correction plan. A written plan with responsible parties and realistic timeframes, so the report becomes work rather than paper.
Common Questions
Is a safety audit confidential?
Audit findings are your business records and are not reported to Cal/OSHA by us. If the audit is performed at the direction of counsel in anticipation of litigation, additional protections may apply — that is a question for your attorney, and we routinely work alongside counsel on that basis.
How long does an audit take?
It depends on headcount, number of sites, and process complexity. A single-site operation is often completed in one day on site with the report delivered afterward. Multi-site and high-hazard operations take longer.
What if the audit finds serious problems?
That is the point of doing it. Findings are ranked so you address genuine exposure first rather than spending your budget on paperwork issues. Correcting a hazard you found yourself is materially better than being cited for it.
Do you audit construction sites?
Yes. Construction operations are audited against the Title 8 construction safety orders, including the site-specific requirements that differ from general industry.
